As I was starting to set up a Medium account (I know, I know, the guy who was very much opposed to it earlier this year, lol), I noticed that we can have a subdomain URL, but haven't heard anyone talk about that, and/or if it's better to have that or have it the way that it currently is.
Any thoughts would be welcomed. Thanks!
I can't see the point of it really, particularly if you are going to be using Medium to rank posts in Google.
It's similar to having a Siterubix domain "elsewhere" - it won't rank.
Although, I suppose no harm done in setting one up for "branding" purposes.
Another mention of your site in Google to give it more credibility, maybe?
I've noticed some Medium subdomains ranking in Google but I have no idea if there's any SEO benefit from doing that.
Looking at all these Google leaks lately I'm pretty sure I saw one long-time Google lie debunked about subdomains being treated as a standalone domain (they are) so in theory by using a subdomain you're cutting off any link juice you may have acquired from the main Medium domain ... which is huge of course.
But I could be wrong ...
Thinking about this a bit more ... I think with a subdomain you're still going to benefit from the DA95 of the Medium domain because you're still being linked to from there and within the entire ecosystem so all good.
So Diane's branding point I think is probably the biggest benefit. SEO wise I think it's fine too. Might be good for topical authority 🙂
