I'm 'delving' deeper in to one of my niche sites, and I think that programmatic SEO is going to be a 'game-changer'...
On a more serious note - I'm working with a FB group that deals a lot with gardening, and I can create a high volume of programmatic SEO around gardening (i.e. "When to plant broccoli is Zone [1-7]", or "what can I plant in August in zone [1-7]"). Does anyone have any experience with this, and does it really offer any value to the site? I wouldn't necessarily be trying to add it to the site just to manipulate anything perse, but I do think that some of the info would be good to have on the site to send users to it.
Just thought I'd ask the group here before I tried anything.
Hey Andy,
Sure, I still think that programmatic SEO can be a viable option is 2024, but ONLY if you're bringing new, unique, and original information to the table.
In all honesty, I would say that "lazy" programmatic SEO was something that was targeted in the September 2023 Heloful Content Update, and therefore will continue to be targeted during futire CORE updates.
What I mean is websites that were basically creating identical landing pages, but slightly changing the information.
You can see this with a lot of travel-type websites.
As an example, something like "best hotels in XXXX"
Let's say that someone targets Thailand, so "Best Hotels in Thailand"
Then every single page/post on their website has exactly the same structure, the same information, but simply changed to suit that particular hotel.
Obviously, massive authority websites, such as Booking.com and Hotels.com use programmatic SEO to create their 1000s and 1000s of lanfing pages for each particular hotel and resort.
Sure, they rank well because they are considered the AUTHORITIES in that niche.
So, for an unknown entity (YOU) in a particular niche, if you're going to use programmatic SEO you need to have something MORE than the authority websites in YOUR NICHE.
If you're simply regurgitating information en masse that can already be found on these authority websites, at a guess, this is what will happen:
First 3-6 months, depending on how much content you're adding, you'll see a fantastic increase in ranking keywords and traffic.
Then, when a CORE update rolls around after your first few initial months it's likely that you're website will get "hit" via the HCU portion of the Core update and you'll lose all those rankings and traffic.
So, it definitely still works in 2024, and you can "mass produce" a lot of content quickly, but you definitely need to be offering something that is NOT FOUND on authority sites in your niche.
So, just looking at your example, of "things to plant" or specific fruits or vegetables in zoones 1-7, I can't (off the top of my head) think of a unique and original angle that others before you haven't covered before.
As I say, when it comes to mass producing content you'll definitely get picked up over the first few months, but without anything new to say it's likely you'll get caught in a future core update.
A vid from Authority Hacker posted here on the DMC by Jóhann is suggesting it's wise to be very careful with scaled content ... which is how programmatic SEO would be categorised, I imagine.
